Fifteen Minutes Of Fame

What a day! My post from yesterday on the BBC and the role it plays in making our democracy work was picked up by a couple of news agencies and ended up being covered in a short piece by Fox News in the US this evening, complete with an interview with yours truly where they went on to ask for my comment on the current Democratic campaigns and the effect the Web was having on how people decide who to vote for. Quite remarkable this Web thing, is it not? Still can’t quite believe it.

I’d guess too that the experience, and other people’s reactions to it, must be respnsible for all kinds of thoughts and questions about the role and importance of the big, broadcast media versus this Web world we are building
- The vastly greater audience of that interview versus the possibly more-influential, powerful and attentive audience of your blog
- The way that big, broadcast media still seem in our minds like the “real” thing, despite what we live and write every day in this space
- Why can’t I hyperlink to the interview footage, or trackback?

Spoke to Shep Smith in the mens’ room – shorter in real life, maybe about 5′5 – anyway he was very interested in doing something on the Web Fire Escape and is even thinking about starting his own blog. Mr O’Reilly was nice, isn’t it amazing how he can be such an expert in so many things, TV guy one minute, leader of a well respected tech-book empire the next. How does he do it? I saw him pour neat Pepto-Bismol into his coffee. Maybe that’s what it is….

I should say, for the record, that this is all just a bit of fun, an experiment about truth and reality and how your perceptions of these can get a little distorted by what you see and read on the Web.

I’m also showing off my l33t digital image editing skillzzzzz, w00t! – as I beleive they say in certain circles.

Shame on me if you believed it. I was rather hoping the context of it – i.e. the fact I talk shite on this blog all the time – might have suggested that all was not as it seemed. Sorry.
