UFO

Since I got the Mac Mini last month and loads of external disk space, I’ve been finally getting round to the long delayed job of dumping down my DV collection into iMovie for editing & DVD burning.

So far it’s mostly been footage of our now 2 year old daughter contained in around 20 Mini-DV video tapes from the last couple of years.

Last night I transferred another tape and when I looked at the clips earlier this evening I found the following startling clip.

The shot shown above is a frame-grab from about 1 minute’s worth of video footage I took a couple of years ago and promptly forgot all about. I was in the garden at the back of our house roughly two years ago – the clip date is August 3rd 2003 – and for whatever reason, I happened to look up towards the sky and noticed a dark stationary object, hovering very high up in the sky above.

I quickly grabbed my Sony PC-101 Mini DV camcorder from where it was sitting in the kitchen and started shooting, mostly so that I could have a look at the object later on a bigger screen, benefitting from the camera’s zoom lens. The object was so small that it was very hard for me to see it on the camcorder’s small LCD screen and the image is really quite shaky even with the camera’s image stabilizer.

But at the time I must have been distracted by something because because until this evening I’d totally forgotten I’d shot it and I never got round to reviewing the video at the time.

In a small number of frames where the focus is good, you can make out quite a distinct dark cigar shape which appears to reflect sunlight at its left-most tip in certain frames (the reflection appears to correspond with the position of the sun at that time of day). I zoomed in and out to get some perspective but the original DV footage is much clearer than the MP4 clip I prepared with iMovie. And there are full resolution frame grabs here and here.

Any UFO experts care to shed any light on what this might be?
